Community Volunteer/Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is eligible to volunteer? Anyone 18 and over is eligible to volunteer providing they have completed an application as well as background check. Once this has been completed, the applicant is assigned to a designated member who will provide training, information and support.
  • Is there an age limit? If the applicant is under 18, we do not require the background check, but we must have the completed application to determine if we have the appropriate needs commensurate with their background and skills. A parent or guardian will be copied on all correspondence, and if this volunteer is working toward school credits, they would need to provide a letter from the school at the first volunteer opportunity. Again, the volunteer is assigned to a designated member.
  • I am only available on weekends. Can I still volunteer? Yes, while most of our interaction with clients is during the work week, there are certain instances where we are at work on weekends. The A-Z Thrift shop is open on Saturdays, we pick up household goods and furniture on weekends, we do gift wrapping at local Barnes and Noble stores on weekends.
  • How can I help Women and children? There are several ways in which you can help. We also need cooks and servers for our work with the Women’s Shelter and Helen Wright center where we serve meals. We need people to help fill bags with clothing for or Operation School Bell which has become a year round operation. You can help in the evenings by attending one of our Target in-store shopping events for students.
  • Must I keep track of the hours that I spend with Assistance League? Yes, we use the hours our volunteers have accumulated in order to apply for grants and other awards. Grantors and agencies want to know how many hours our volunteers have spent during the year. Volunteers are equal to around $25/hr. and showing good participation is key.
  • Once I sign up to volunteer, am I obligated to always be available at the same time? No, one of the nice things about Assistance League is that you will get notices of needs and are able to pick and choose what you want to do that fits with your schedule.
  • Do I have to have training before volunteering? Yes, you will be assigned to a contact person who will orient you to our programs and help to get you started. You may have a shop orientation so that you know the daily operation and what is needed, but you will always be working with one of our members
